Upward Toward the Sun

This is a celebration of hair that grows like a flower, upward toward the sun! This is for all of you flowerhead ladies out there no matter what you look like. If your hair grows upward, this is for you. And if your hair grows downward, well, there are some tips in here for you too ;-)
Photos, videos, advice, product reviews and more... all delivered in a clear, easy to read fashion. (Click the photos for more info)
It's January 1, 2010. Time for a new blog intro! I've decided that this is a political blog as much as it is a hair blog. After all, hair is political, especially kinky/curly/coily hair. During the last two years that I've been writing this blog, I've noticed more and more natural hair blogs, youtube videos, and natural hair products designed with flowerheads in mind. (What's a flowerhead? Ladies (and gentlemen) if your hair grows upward toward the sun like a flower, then you are a flowerhead.) That's great. I love seeing the great photos and sisters on the street rocking their fro's. Still, at least for me, I still hear the term "good hair" much too often. And the adoration of light colored skin is destructively naive. Hence, my decision to add a little more politics to this blog. Let 2011 be the year of enlightenment!

Yarn braids.  Very interesting.  This reminds me of a Senegalese and Ghanian hair wrap technique using thread.  I’m definitely going to be trying this but I wouldn’t dare make such small sections!  I would make mine more of a Jamaican braid extension styl-ie, lol.  If you watch this video, make sure to also watch how to take them out, cuz that’s a doozy.

Ok.  I’ve had it!  After months of wearing my hair in a wild, loose puff and using random conditioners to wash my hair, it’s tangled hay!  Dry, dry, dry, hay.  I had to do my default detangler hair style:  box braids after combing through with a fine tooth comb with scissors in hand to cut out knots.  Again.  This is the fourth time in two years I’ve had to do this.  At this rate, I won’t have a hair left on my head.
And to think I tried to participate in a “grow your hair” contest.  I’m sure I have less than I started out with in January.
I’m done using store-bought products.  Sorry Darcy’s but the wax in your products did my hair in.  I’ll still use Bee Mine as a pre-wash conditioner though.
So anyway, I’m going to have to make my own hair products.  I know what my hair needs and apparently no one else is having the same problem.  Moisture.  Period.  Anything in a hair product that promotes dryness, like alcohol or wax, or cleaner’s chemicals, is detrimental.  Period.
I think that we flower-heads get so used to having dry hair that we just assume that our hair has to be dry.  I never bought that thinking.
Okay, so after my hair trauma yesterday, I made a vow to keep my hair in a “protective style” for a year.  And I’m one of those chicks who hates the term “protective style.”  It sounds so idiotic and debilitating.  I just don’t have a choice.  My cute “loosed-out” hair styles will be on vacation for a year, if I can help it.
I’m lost regarding creating a conditioner that I can wash my hair with.  Clean hair and scalp are a must.  One thing that I want to use is coconut creme, hence the picture and website recipe.
Stay tuned for more hair tales in October!

Cut?

Hair washing day :(  I’ve never been closer to cutting it all off… Too time consuming…
